A colonoscopy is a common gastrointestinal procedure used to evaluate the large intestine, or colon. Dr. Behara performs the procedure to evaluate symptoms such as abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, blood in the stool, sudden weight loss, and to help determine the causes of issues including inflammation, ulcers, colon polyps and colon cancer. Dr. Behara recommends colonoscopies for routine colon cancer screening, starting at age 50 (or sooner if a family member had colon cancer).

• Polyp Removal and Colon Cancer prevention:
• Upper Endoscopy (EGD): Preparation Instructions
EGD is a common gastrointestinal procedure that evaluates the lining of the esophagus, the stomach, and the duodenum. Dr. Behara performs this procedure to evaluate symptoms of the esophagus, the stomach, and the duodenum, and to diagnose disorders such as peptic ulcers, Stomach cancer, Esophagitis and Barrett’s esophagus.
• Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (small bowel Capsule Endoscopy): Preparation Instructions
A disposable capsule containing video camera, light, transmitter, and battery is swallowed and records a video of the small intestine lining as it slowly passes though the small bowel. Dr. Behara performs this procedure to identify the source of obscure blood loss or unexplained iron deficiency anemia, and other conditions such as small bowel tumors, Celiac disease, or Crohn’s disease.
• Diagnostic and Therapeutic Pancreatic Biliary Endoscopy (ERCP): Preparation Instructions
ERCP is a combined endoscopic and radiological examination of the bile duct system and pancreatic ducts, at times coupled with the controlled endoscopic cutting of the outlet of those ducts and removal of gall stones from the bile ducts. Dr. Behara performs ERCP with expertise in this procedure.
• Esophageal Manometry and Esophageal PH Monitoring: Preparation Instructions, 24-hour ph impedence testing
• Hemorrhoid Banding: Preparation Instructions
At Dr. Behara’s office, we use the CRH O. Regan System to treat internal hemorrhoids. This is a highly effective (99.1 %), minimally invasive procedure that is performed in our office in less than a minute. If there are multiple hemorrhoids, we treat them one at a time in separate visits. In most cases, banding can take place during your first appointment.
• Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG): Preparation Instructions
• Flexible Sigmoidoscopy:
Used for examination of the lower 30% of the colon and rectum.
• Esophageal Dilation:
Procedure used to treat esophageal conditions such as esophageal strictures, rings, and webs, using controlled stretching, balloon dilators, or Savary/Maloney dilators.
An examination of the anus performed with an instrument only several inches in length, primarily to evaluate for hemorrhoids and fissures.
• Argon Plasma Coagulation:
Used for the ablation treatment of various abnormal vascular structures of the upper and lower digestive tract.
